The Intelligent Network (IN) concept, proposed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), represents an approach to deal with the growing demand for complex services in communication networks. Major advantages of this concept are easy service creation, independence of vendor-speciic equipment, and an economical distribution of service functionality within the network. Dedicated signalling networks like Signalling System 7 will be of major importance in order to cope with the higher signalling traac. The performance evaluation of Intelligent networks is diicult due to the complexity of services and a strong dependence on the performance of the signalling network. The analysis of the corresponding models quickly becomes impractical due to their size. The aim of this work is to develop tools and techniques which allow for the analysis of large-scale IN, thereby focusing on analytical approaches which involve hierarchical decomposition, specialized numerical methods, and distributable solution techniques. Once the performance analysis of larger IN conngurations is possible, the mapping of service modules to physical network entities can be optimized.
